And the Winner Is....
Gordon,
the attached hot shows Marty presenting Adrienne with the
prize from the drawing. She is tickled pink. She has already
started the battery for a full charge. Now I just need to identify
one of our SPARC fellow members who has the Bao Feng software to
make it easier to load the essential info so Adrienne can use it
properly.
Thanks, Red N3TG

Field Day Raffle Winner
Hi,
On Wednesday, Marty, NV3H, conducted the SPARC field Day Tech Raffle.
This raffle offered the chance to win a Handheld UHF/VHF radio to any
technician licensed amateur radio operator who made at least one contact
at our field day site.
We has several entries. In fact at one point all the HF radios on site
were being operated by tech class operators under the supervision of
control operators.
Evelyn, the daughter of Marty drew a ping pong ball from a plastic bag,
and the
WINNER IS Adrianne, K3MAF.
Adrianne has been a tech for 10 years. She made 10 QSOs on the GOTA
station and looked like she was having a wonderful time. There is a
good story about how she got her tech license, but we will let Adrianne
tell it at our next club meeting.
Once again, it was a great field day!

Field Day is Over
Hi,
We shout all down at 2 PM today. Everything was still working. We had
all the equipment down and loaded by 3 and I was home starting to relax
by 3:30. It did start to rain lightly just before 3 which scared us a
little, but we were happy that it did not rain significantly during the
event.
I thought all went very well. We had a nice mix of older and newer hams
and the GOTA station was very active.
We had several people taking pictures. We hope to have the web page
with all the pictures up in a couple of days.
Thank you all for making this a very time.

Field Day Update - Saturday at 0900
Hi,
Weather is looking good. Maybe a thunderstorm passing through at 5PM.
Now. it is not raining and the temperature is comfortable. It is very
lightly misting at my QTH.
Therefore, see you at 1000 to start setting up.

Field Day Update Friday at 2100
Hi,
Antenna hanging went very well. No rain. Paul, K4PDF; Bill, K4UPE; and
Gordon, NQ4K; each successfully got a rope over a light pole. There was
a big crowd of SPARCies there to help. Steve, KN4BGW, took pictures of
the activities. Dick, W2YE, for the first time in my memory, did not
even try to use his EZ-Hang slingshot.
Paul, KK4AIA, dropped of a table and canopy for us to use tomorrow. We
stored it in the baseball field concession stand.
Red, N3TG, the trustee for our club call sign, dropped off a copy of the
station license and some QSL cards to put by the radios to remind us of
what call sign to use.
It was a successful start to Field Day.
Tomorrow, Saturday, we start at 1000 with setup. The weather forecast
calls for a ~70 percent probability of rain from 1000 - 1200, during our
prime setup time. We will postpone the start of setup by an hour or two
if it is raining hard. We will send out an email at 0900 either way.
Wishing for good weather,

Field Day Update at 1800
Hi,
It is not raining in Herndon, so we might have an hour or so of no rain
in which to hang antenna ropes.
See you there.

Field Day, Update Friday Morning
Hi,
It is raining. The weather forecast predicts rain on and off through
Saturday late afternoon. The beginning of Field Day might be wet.
Paul, K4PDF, is going to meet with the Jason Testerman, the Park View
High School athletic director today at 1100 to review the areas we are
going to use. I am going to meet Paul there.
Paul suggests we consider rearranging things to use the concrete pad,
behind home base, both dugouts, and maybe the concession stand. We
could put the radios under cover and the QRM tents on concrete. We then
need to think about where to hang the antennas. If you would like to
join us at 1300 to discuss this, you are free to join us.
Putting up ropes in the rain is not fun. We will have to see what the
weather is at 7PM. We could cancel now, however, that just puts rope
hanging off until the probable rain tomorrow morning. So we will plan
on meeting at 7 PM this evening.
If the rain is really bad, we will send out an email at 6:00 PM
postponing the antenna hanging until tomorrow. Otherwise it is on.

Field Day Update - Thursday
Hi,
We have an email from Bill Morine, N2COP, Vice Director, Roanoke
Division, who indicates that her and Jim Boehner, N2ZZ, Roanoke Division
Director, plan on visiting us on Sunday around 1:30 - 2:00 PM. Just
before we shut down.
Also the weather is changing.
Friday looks OK for antenna rope hanging. Low 70's and low
probability of rain.
Saturday looks wet. Moderate probability of rain at 10AM, when we
start setup, increasing to high probability at 5 PM. Maybe a
thunderstorm moving through the area. Temperatures in the mid-80's.
Sunday good free of rain, with the temperatures peaking at 86 at 2-4
PM.
The forecast seems to change every time I check the weather. A little
rain we can handle, a lot of rain we cannot.

Field Day Wednesday Update
Hi,
Field Day is getting close.
No one has volunteered to work the food for the 6:00 PM club party on
Saturday. So everyone can feel free to come out and join the
camaraderie and, if you want, please bring something to eat and a little
extra.
We still have many open operator times. Please email me if you want a
particular time.
The weather is looking OK. some thunderstorms forecast for Friday and
Saturday. Reasonable temperatures on Friday and Saturday, but hot on Sunday.
Not sure what we will do if it is raining hard on Saturday when we are
scheduled to set up. Still a few days away and we know that the weather
forecast can change.

Field Day - UPDATE
Hi,
All is coming along well.
Jim, AF4MO, had requested a newspaper article from the Loudoun
Times-Mirror. If you see it, please save.
Marty, NV3H, has invited folks to meet our Government Official and
Representative of an Agency requirements.
Russ, W3RST, reports that the generator is running well and will be
present at the site.
Gary, K4SRX, is going to help, and provide his truck, to move stuff from
my QTH to the field site.
Mark, KI4OBT, volunteered a table for one of the radio tents.
Aiden, KN4BGY, and David, KN4BGZ, volunteered for a long shirt on one of
the SSB radios.
Jim, AF4MO, again volunteered for a night shift on one of the SSB
radios. He has done this for many years. Sometimes, I suspect hs is the
only one awake out there.
All is coming along well.
The RED in the attached plan highlights where we still need some help.
Please also send me your desired operating times. I would like to fill
up the operator schedule especially for the SSB stations. Even if you
only want an hour, that is OK.
The CW ops will work out the schedule among themselves.

Field Day Raffle
Hi,
In addition to all the other activities, we will hold a field day
raffle. The raffle is open to all technician class hams and to enter
the raffle, they have to make at least one QSO from our field day site.
We hope this will generate some additional traffic to the GOTA station
and stimulate some interest among techs who have not progressed in their
amateur radio experience.
We will have a jar and slips of paper for the entry forms.
The raffle prize will be a Baefeng radio suitable for use by technician
class operators.
If you know of some techs, please encourage them to come out and try out
HF. We have also sent an email to the graduates of our two recent tech
classes.

Field Day Plan version 2
Hi,
We discussed the field day plan at our meeting last night and I have
also received a few emails from folks volunteering to provide material.
Monte, KV4KS, will provide a radio station, an IC-7000 with the
accessories.
Paul, KK4AIA, will provide a table and a canopy.
Bill, N3TG, volunteered to be a CW op during day. The CW ops will
develop a schedule.
Jim, AF4MO, is soliciting a Times-Mirror article.
Marty, NV3H, it soliciting a visit from an elected Government official.
We still need volunteers for:
Sending the message traffic.
Arranging a site visit by a representative of an agency.
Coordinator for the 6PM dinner.
Eric, AJ4LN, is coordinating the radio-computer networking. He sent out
a separate email. Friday, 15 June, at 1PM at his QTH.
All is coming long well.

Field Day
Hi,
Field Day is coming up soon. The weekend of 22-23-24 June.
Paul, K4PDF, has achieved success and secured the same location as last
year - the area between the parking lot and baseball fields at park View
High School, in Sterling.
We hope to do what we did last year. What we did last year, with the
names of the hams who have moved away, is on our website.
As you can see, the major item of equipment we are short is a third HF
radio. So we are looking for a volunteer to bring a radio to be our
second SSB station.
A lot of club members are bringing equipment. Please verify that you
are still planning on attending and bringing the items lists.
Finally, we will need a lot of help in keeping the radios on the air for
the 24 hours of field day. Please think about when you can operate and
let us know. We can start filling in the empty operator slots.
We can talk more about this at the meeting on Friday.

Virginia QSO Party Awards Ceremony
Hi,
The Awards Ceremony for the Virginia QSO Party will be held at the
Manassas Hamfest on Sunday, 3 June, at 0900.
The presentation normally consists of a short review of the Party (i.e.,
statistics, etc.) followed by the presentation of the plaques. We will
also have the certificates available to be picked up. Certificates and
plaques not picked up will be mailed later to the recipients.
We know that the awards ceremony conflicts with the support to the
Herndon Festival 5/10K races. This conflict started a few years ago and
we have not figured a way to de-conflict the two events.
We will post the awards ceremony briefing and pictures as soon as we can
after Sunday. Might take a few days.
If you are supporting the awards ceremony, you should be able to get a
free pass by going to the table at the front gate. So far, the SPARC
contingent is Eric, AJ4LN, and myself.

Meeting on Friday, 8 June, at 7PM
Hi,
It is time for the June SPARC meeting. Friday, 8 June. This is the
SECOND Friday of the month. We did not want to schedule too many events
together so we moved the meeting to the following week.
The events this weekend are (separate emails are being sent about each):
Saturday, Herndon Festival booth - CANCELLED
Sunday, Herndon Festival 5/10K race support
Manassas Hamfest / Virginia QSO Party Awards Ceremony
Refreshments for this months meeting are by Shiva, KM4NPL.
The presentation for this month is by Dave, K7HMP/4, is a NVIS Book
Review and Topics of Interest from that book. NVIS (Near Vertical
Incidence System) is an of antenna placement which directs a significant
amount of the radiated energy nearly vertically so the the reflection
from the ionosphere bounces back down the the earth rather than skipping
a far distance. This facilitates close in communication and is useful
in events such as the Virginia QSO party, in which we want to talk to
hams in VA. Dave will correct my description and provide insights in
NVIS operation.
If Dave want to come up a little early to avoid traffic, we will take
him out to dinner at Joe's restaurant. If so, we will send out a
separate email to all.
Field day is coming up on the fourth full weekend in June, 23-24 June.
Paul, P4PDF, has worked magic and secured permission for us to use the
Park View High School baseball field area again this year. Our approach
is to do what we did last year. We have had some people leave the area
so we need some additional equipment and definitely need volunteers to
operate the radios for the 24 hours of the event. Again, a separate
email will follow.
We also have the election of officers for next year. We have need for
many people to help with the running of the club. If you are
interested, please let us know.
Once again, we will close with the Tech-Ten Talk Team's Tech-Ten-Talk.
See you at the meeting.
