SPARC's monthly meeting was held on Wednesday, April 6th, at the Claude Moore Community Center. We had 19 members in attendance.
During member introductions, Gordon, NQ4K showed his certificate for achieving first place in Virginia for the 15 meter phone category in the ARRL International DX Contest. Congratulations to Gordon!!!
Dick, W2YE, announced that he is seeking a letter manage to help out with the QSL bureau. The job takes just a few hours each month to sort and mail incoming QSL cards. Contact Dick if you'd like to help out.
Gordon discussed plans for the upcoming HerdonFest on Jun 4th and 5th. We will operate an information booth on Saturday and provide radio support to the races on Sunday. Gordon distributed the initial plan and work assignments were updated. The plan will be finalized at next month's meeting.
The 2011 QSO party is now behind us and we had great participation. A scoring party for the paper logs was planned at Gordon's house for Apr 23rd. Initial data/results from the QSO Party will be posted on the club website in late April.
In preparation for Field Day, Eric, AJ4LN, will host a working session at his home to finalize the setup of the N1MM logging software. All of the computers will be networked so they can share the same database. If you are providing a field day computer, the meeting at Eric's will be on April 30th at 0900.
For this week's presentation, Henry, K2BFY, provided a quick-start CW course. Henry recommends the Chuck Adams, K7QO, code course. The course is a set of audio files in MP3 format that will work on practically any player. According to Henry, "Anyone can do it." We all practiced by copying several letters. Henry says that experienced operators recognize the sounds and even hear words as opposed to recognizing the individual letters. (Personally, I have a long way to go.) Thanks to Henry for this fun discussion.
The next meeting will be May 4th, 7:00 PM, at the Community Center. See you then.
